Movies Watched -- Dead Man (1996)

121 minutes … I LOVED this movie, it was hilarious, just fall-down funny. I had no idea what to expect, I mean I know Jim Jarmusch and his hair, but I wasn’t aware that he was a funny guy as well as an ar-teest. Gary Farmer is brilliant as the Injun, and Johnny Depp’s pretty face is perfect for the part. This is a green-go, highly recommended. The score is also interesting.

I could drop this movie into PremierePro and cut at least 10 minutes out … on the DVD there was 15 minutes worth of scenes that Jarmusch already cut out, but he could have tightened it up a bit more, I think. Despite the length, it was very good.

Movies Watched -- Mesrine: Part 1: Killer Instinct (2008)

In French. 113 minute running time so a little too long. About a French gangster who was a “legend” in the 1960s … it’s not badly done, definitely a well-funded movie, but I wondered why the French and Canadian authorities were so bad about taking this guy out of the game. The thug has various beautiful girlfriends and wives, and Depardieu and his nose also appears in the movie. It’s not super terrible, but I wouldn’t go out of my way to see it.

(Seems like poker player / crypto guy Karl Chappe-Gatien is a fan of actor Vincent Cassel since he has a lot of the same body language.)

Movies Watched -- The 39 Steps (1935)

86 minute running time … Alfred Hitchcock, maybe at his best? But he never made a bad movie, they just run from good to great. Green-go, recommended for sure. I saw this 30 years ago and still remembered the political rally speech scene the best.

Movies Watched -- Mr. Freedom (1969)

92 minute running time … political satire from the late 1960s, it can’t have gotten much play-time at the time, just too incendiary, but it is funny. The big handsome palooka (John Abbey) playing Mr. Freedom was good. This has to be a cult movie now, but I wouldn’t go out of my way for it.

Movies Watched -- The Caine Mutiny (1954)

125 minute running time so 25 minutes too long … I’ve mentioned I don’t like Humphrey Bogart, he was such an odd Hollywood star since he was short and scrawny and funny-looking and couldn’t really act … anyway, this was a strange movie, interesting in a way because you didn’t see mental illness movies in the 50s, especially when the sick man was an officer in the military … I liked the class angle in this movie, with the rich-kid Princeton guy and how the others related to him … I can’t recommend it because it was overly long, but it is a unique movie for the time.

Movies Watched -- Zabriskie Point (1970)

110 minute running time … dusty, hippie group sex in the desert and blowing up the squares … Daria Halprin was a great beauty, but this movie didn’t have much more going for it… hard pass.

Movies Watched -- Invisible Girlfriend (2009)

74 minute running time … David Redmon made one good documentary (Girl Model) … I tried to watch Kamp Katrina but it was so depressing I quit five minutes in and I should have known better than to get Invisible Girlfriend since it tracks the life of one mentally ill guy who I guess was in Kamp Katrina … equally depressing and boring, who watches stuff like this?!? Ugh!
