Norma Tanega sings Jubilation … Alone I can’t fly … beautiful song, a real 60s vibe, resonates with all fellow Gen-Xers, I bet:

116 minute running time so at least 20 minutes too long … kind of interesting, but got talky and super heavy on morality, allegorical, and filled with Christian symbolism so I wasn’t that thrilled … unusual ending, didn’t see it coming … this was a John Farr reco. This guy bothered to identify all the semi-Biblical characters of Odd Man Out .

“… the film is telling me to give Johnny’s situation a more abstract significance. And, finally, that significance comes through loud and clear when Johnny shouts out the agape verses from 1 Corinthians, and Lukey and the doctor discuss his soul. This is not your usual heist movie.” That’s an understatement!

107 minute running time which is fairly long for a silent movie … heavy-handed morality tale about the dangers of demon liquor and what it does to marriages and families, etc. Made use of double exposure (see screencap) to good effect … I wasn’t super thrilled with it, but Ingmar Bergman apparently watched it at least a hundred times. This was a John Farr reco.

160 minute running time so at least an hour too long … I like Gilbert & Sullivan operettas, especially The Mikado, but I wasn’t too interested in this historical re-creation, mainly because of its extreme length. Theater people will like it, Farr no doubt loved it (he did), but I say you can give it a miss.
