Movies Watched -- Nostalgia for the Light (2010)

In Spanish. Documentary. 90 minute running time, so the right length … this was a John Farr reco … I did not know about the Chilean concentration camps under Pinochet or about the systematic torture and killing of tens of thousands of people … grim stuff … the filmmaker is interested in connecting astronomy and archaeology (you know, exploring the distant past) to the lack of exploration of Chile’s horrific recent past. It reminded me of China in the sense that the persecutors, tormentors, and torturers of the Cultural Revolution still live side by side with their victims, even today, and that’s also true in Chile.

Parents turned over then “disappeared”

Movies Watched -- Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives (2010)

In Thai … 114 minute running time so at least 20 or 30 minutes too long … I don’t know whom I have to blame for this one, it wasn’t a John Farr recommendation … I don’t get Thai culture, they’re apparently into ghosts and mysticism and it’s all a bit bizarre … the movie is about a guy who is dying of kidney failure and his club-footed sister-in-law is around during his last days and his wife’s ghost appears and his lost son reappears (in the form of a monkey) … there’s a scene where a princess is screwed by a catfish — you see what I’m saying about the weirdness? It’s just no good, terrible really. Give it a miss.

The World Is So Small 'til It Ain't

Never heard of “Mac Miller,” but he was apparently a white rapper who died young … I like this cover of his song, Small Worlds, by a hip dude named Rayland Baxter:

Distance Ain't No Friend Of Mine

Love her voice and the song, Nyah Grace singing Black Coffee. I don’t drink coffee, but I do have the occasional chai as a treat. I hear some Norah Jones notes on the piano … I wonder if Nyah is half Indian (subcontinent)?
