Movies Watched -- Off the Rails (2016)

Added on by C. Maoxian.

Documentary, 86 minute running time. Tells the story of a guy named Darius who has Asperger’s Syndrome, and who is obsessed with the New York Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA) and has spent half his life in prison since he takes buses and subway trains for rides, responsibly making all the stops of course. The justice system doesn’t really know what to do with him, other than lock him up for extended periods of time.

Darius is extremely affable and intelligent … he’s well-fed and neatly dressed when outside of prison … people want to help him, esp. the filmmaker, but in a way he can’t be helped and society has no way to deal with it.

105 minute running time … the twist in this pretty-girl-abducted-and-trapped-in-some-creep’s-basement is so large that I won’t spoil it… pretty girl is indeed pretty with giant eyes and good bones … John Goodman looks terrible, he was always been fat, but now he’s old and morbidly obese and crippled and can’t move anymore … every time he opens his mouth I say, “Dude, I can get you a toe by this afternoon….” This was a Top 100 movie (#26 no less) from 2016, that’s why I watched it, but I don’t recommend it.

119 minute running time so at least 20 minutes too long, but I liked this one, it was weirdly wonderful and wonderfully weird … quite a few scenes almost made me fall out of my chair laughing … maybe I was in the mood for this … if I had been less patient, I might have seen it as hopelessly pretentious or contrived, but no, I loved it in the end, it’s just hilarious. I have to watch this crazy Greek director’s other stuff now. A mainstream audience would hate this movie, but the critics no doubt praised it endlessly, I’ll have to check. (Yes, they did, and yes, they did.)

Green-go! John Farr got it right this time.

Documentary. 95 minute running time … always loved Linda Ronstadt, what a voice, didn’t know about her inventor grandfather (mom’s side), or half-Mexican? grandfather (dad’s side) … or growing up in Tucson … or her Parkinson’s … or any of it, really, but now I do … she led an interesting life and is a sharp cookie. I enjoyed the documentary.

In Korean. 101 minute running time. The Koreans have reached the level of economic development where they can now make pointless talk talk talk movies like this one … who gives a shit about this girl and her old fart boyfriend? It’s true that she’s attractive and looks a bit like my old buddy Sara Jane, but really, who cares? John Farr did me dirty by recommending this one, but I can steer you right and say give this one a miss!

It’s boring to talk about yourself all the time, isn’t it?

96 minute running time … tells the story of Dr. Samuel Mudd, who unwittingly set John Wilkes Booth leg following the Lincoln assassination, and was convicted of being a conspirator and sent to Dry Tortugas as a result … he escaped and was re-captured and eventually was exonerated … interesting story pretty well told by director John Ford … Farr says Ford blends fact and fiction, but that’s OK.
