Movies Watched -- Red River (1947)

133 minute running time, so way way way too long … I abandoned this at the one hour mark and should have quit sooner … Marion Morrison with his weird way of talking and walking … pretty boy Montgomery Clift may explain why John Farr recommended this, but I hated this one … dumb violence, fake Injun attacks, phony father-son psycho-drama, it just sucked. Total avoid.

101 minute running time … I liked this one … an unusual movie, neat to see the ancient ski technology … Redford plays a selfish rogue, getting ahead with his raw talent and killer good looks … able to bang the hottest girl (Carole Carle) in the horseshit town he goes home to when not banging a sophisticated Ivanka beauty while in Europe, though she could take him or leave him … a good recommendation by John Farr, I’d never heard of this one, and I’m glad I did … green-go. For once the Criterion Collection gets it right with an English language selection.

I've got a chance to go to Denver this fall and study dental hygiene.

Movies Watched -- Brief Encounter (1945)

Added on by C. Maoxian.

86 minute running time … a Noel Coward play made for the big screen … an extramarital affair treated with great sensitivity, maybe too much sensitivity … "When I behold upon the night starred face huge cloudy symbols of a high … something with seven letters. Romance, I think. I’m almost sure it is.” A very British approach …I’ll give it a green-go rating for now, haven’t seen many movies from 1945 so it might get bumped off the list later, we’ll see.

I'm sure that the whole situation must seem inexpressibly vulgar to you.

96 minute running time … this wasn’t bad, but it’s not good enough to recommend either … survival in the African bush after being captured and set free (hunter and hunted stuff) … John Farr recommended this one, probably for the homoerotic element (you watch a handsome nearly naked guy (the writer-director himself) with an amazing physique for 90% of the picture). Glad I saw it anyway.

102 minute running time, so the right length, but this was terrible and I abandoned it at the ten minute mark and fast forwarded through … dumb story, bad dialogue, bad acting, awful late 80’s look, unattractive female lead with a butch haircut … just dreadful. David Mamet directorial debut, ugh. A rare case where John Farr gets it completely wrong and leads me astray. Avoid this one, full red rating.
