Movies Watched -- Gravity

Added on by C. Maoxian.

Broke at the one hour mark then couldn't get into it when I came back and ended up fast forwarding to the end ... Sandra Bullock lost a serious amount of body fat for this role but her tits still looked great which makes me wonder if they're real ... she's 50 years old with the body of someone half her age ... anyway, some really spectacular technical wizardy for the space shots, must have been amazing on the big screen ... girl power thing ... if you want to watch a survival movie from 2013 see "All Is Lost" instead. Can't recommend this one but will give it a yellow rating despite fast forwarding.

Netflix After Hours

The other day on Twitter I asked how liquid NFLX was when it crashed since I was away from the desk ... no one replied because I'm followed only by bots and fantasy footballers, so I had to look it up on my own. It fell from 448 to 336 in the first 15 minutes after the close.  Must have been impossible to short it as it collapsed.  The next morning it opened around $332 and rallied to $360. If trading were easy, everyone would be rich.

Bracing: Poor kids who do everything right don't do better than rich kids who do everything wrong wapo.st/1szZO8E @washingtonpost

Rich parents can afford to spend more time and money on their kids ... Affluent parents talk to their kids three more hours a week on average than poor parents ... rich high school dropouts remain in the top about as much as poor college grads stay stuck in the bottom — 14 versus 16 percent, respectively. Not only that, but these low-income strivers are just as likely to end up in the bottom as these wealthy ne'er-do-wells. Some meritocracy.

Ingrid Michaelson Playlist

Added on by C. Maoxian.

After I discovered the cute song The Way I Am, I created an Ingrid Michaelson station in Pandora; here's a list of the first 50 songs their algo generated.  I hated almost all of them.  I loathe the Jack Johnson / Jason Mraz sound ... it's white, cutesy, inoffensive, anodyne ... awful. Easy listening for Gen Y and Millennials.

  • Ingrid Michaelson -- Maybe
  • Regina Spektor -- The Call
  • Joshua Radin -- I'd Rather Be With You
  • Jaymay -- Gray Or Blue
  • Ingrid Michaelson -- Keep Breathing (Live)
  • Sara Bareilles -- 1000 Times
  • Danna/Devotchka -- The Winner Is
  • Plain White T's -- Rhythm Of Love
  • Matt White -- Love
  • Ingrid Michaelson -- Men Of Snow
  • Jason Wade -- You Belong To Me
  • Grace Potter & The Nocturnals -- Apologies
  • A Fine Frenzy -- Almost Lover
  • Ingrid Michaelson -- Can't Help Falling In Love
  • Rosie Thomas -- Farewell
  • Jack Johnson -- Cupid [THIS GUY THE POSTER BOY FOR THIS MICKEY MOUSE GENRE]
  • IZ Kamakawiwo'ole -- Over The Rainbow
  • Sara Bareilles -- Fairytale (2003)
  • Matt Nathanson -- Faster
  • Glen Hansard & Marketa Irglova -- Falling Slowly
  • Erin McCarley -- Love, Save The Empty
  • Ray LaMontagne -- Hold You In My Arms
  • Lenka -- The Show [THIS IS A CUTE ONE]
  • Bright Eyes -- First Day Of My Life
  • Adele -- Make You Feel My Love
  • The Wallin' Jennys -- Long Time Traveller

Baycloud - Google, Ghostery and the limits of Ad Blocking.

Omissions like these are inevitable with the curated list approach, because the continuously changing web and multiple techniques for data collection means the list can never be comprehensive. Moreover, organisational entropy, if not competitive challenge, will inevitably result in annoying false positives. Nevertheless, it is a mystery why a company so associated with the ecosystem of smaller AdTech companies blocks their ability to collect data more efficiently than it does their biggest competitor. Only a transparent, widely recognised indication of consent with regulatory backing, as hopefully the Do Not Track signal will become in Europe, can ensure responsible web activity collection will be widespread enough to return trust to the web, and create a level playing field where smaller companies have a chance to prosper.

Patagonia Provisions - Rethinking Our Food Chain

The tradition and culture of food have always been important to us at Patagonia. On our many travels, the meals—cedar-planked salmon with First Nations friends in BC, tsampa in yak-hair tents in Tibet, asado and chimichurri with Patagonian gauchos —become a vital part of the experience. What we eat does more than just fill our stomachs and nourish our bodies; good food lifts our spirits and helps us understand the world a little better.

NFL Sunday Ticket - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

NFL Sunday Ticket is an out-of-market sports package that broadcasts National Football League regular season games unavailable on local affiliates. It carries all regional Sunday afternoon games produced by Fox and CBS. The ideal customer of this package is presumed (based on advertisements) to be a fan of a team who is unable to see their team on local television because they do not reside in that team's market. The package is available in the United States exclusively on DirecTV (which also offers it on the Internet, on certain tablets and smartphones, and JetBlue Airways flights); in Canada on several satellite and cable providers, in Mexico and Latin America on SKY México, in South America and the Caribbean on DirecTV Latin America, and several cable providers in The Bahamas and Bermuda.

How to Be Polite

When you are at a party and are thrust into conversation with someone, see how long you can hold off before talking about what they do for a living. And when that painful lull arrives, be the master of it. I have come to revel in that agonizing first pause, because I know that I can push a conversation through. Just ask the other person what they do, and right after they tell you, say: “Wow. That sounds hard.”

 NUS 10Q

As of June 30, 2014, working capital was $327.4 million, compared to $341.5 million as of December 31, 2013. Cash and cash equivalents as of June 30, 2014 and December 31, 2013 were $219.5 million and $525.2 million, respectively. The decrease in cash and cash equivalents reflects lower than anticipated revenue growth in Mainland China, and cash payments for inventory and accrued selling and other expenses. ... As of June 30, 2014, we were in violation of our restricted payments covenant under our amended and restated note purchase and private shelf agreement...

In addition, we have approximately $80 million in debt that will become due in September. If we are not able to refinance or extend our current lines of credit in a timely manner, we may need to defer certain capital and operating expenditures, dividend payments and stock repurchases. The majority of our historical expenses have been variable in nature and as such, a potential reduction in the level of revenue would reduce our cash flow needs, although these reductions may not allow us sufficient free cash flow to pursue all attractive strategic initiatives. In the event that our current cash balances, future cash flow from operations and current lines of credit are not sufficient to meet our obligations or strategic needs, we are unsuccessful in obtaining additional financing, or we otherwise deem it appropriate to strengthen our balance sheet, we may raise additional funds in the debt or equity markets or restructure our current debt obligations.

Look again at that dot. That’s here. That’s home. That’s us. On it everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives. The aggregate of our joy and suffering, thousands of confident religions, ideologies, and economic doctrines, every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilization, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every mother and father, hopeful child, inventor and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every ‘superstar,’ every ‘supreme leader,’ every saint and sinner in the history of our species lived there — on a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam.

The Earth is a very small stage in a vast cosmic arena. Think of the rivers of blood spilled by all those generals and emperors so that, in glory and triumph, they could become the momentary masters of a fraction of a dot. Think of the endless cruelties visited by the inhabitants of one corner of this pixel on the scarcely distinguishable inhabitants of some other corner, how frequent their misunderstandings, how eager they are to kill one another, how fervent their hatreds.

Our posturings, our imagined self-importance, the delusion that we have some privileged position in the Universe, are challenged by this point of pale light. Our planet is a lonely speck in the great enveloping cosmic dark. In our obscurity, in all this vastness, there is no hint that help will come from elsewhere to save us from ourselves.

The Earth is the only world known so far to harbor life. There is nowhere else, at least in the near future, to which our species could migrate. Visit, yes. Settle, not yet. Like it or not, for the moment the Earth is where we make our stand.

It has been said that astronomy is a humbling and character-building experience. There is perhaps no better demonstration of the folly of human conceits than this distant image of our tiny world. To me, it underscores our responsibility to deal more kindly with one another, and to preserve and cherish the pale blue dot, the only home we’ve ever known.

The iPhone 6 Plus — Tools and Toys

Of course, the star performer of this show is that beautifully gigantic 5.5″ screen. I believe the specification goes something like “401 PPI”, which means sharp in English. Text floats microns under the glass and every bit of the screen is perfectly sharp. I’ve been able to find details in my photographs that I normally would only see on my Retina MacBook Pro. Reading text is so easy on the eyes. Colours pop even better than before. I could go on forever about this screen.

The $45 open-source router automatically directs all data that connects to it by ethernet or Wifi through the Tor network, hiding the user’s IP address and skirting censorship. It’s also small enough to hide two in a pack of cigarettes. Germar points out that its rounded corners means it can even be stowed in a bodily orifice.

Playing With Conventions

Added on by C. Maoxian.

From September 1985 in The Sunday Times:

The project ... is The Singing Detective, seven-and-half hours of drama due to start shooting in January which, says Potter, will make Pennies from Heaven look like a rehearsal. It is about a writer of cheap detective fiction (Michael Gambon is likely to play the role) in hospital with 100% psoriasis. He loses control of his body temperature and starts to fantasise. This is something which happened to Potter himself, although he claims the series is not autobiographical.
'I'm playing with the conventions - the musical convention, the situation comedy convention, the detective story convention - in order to try to see what TV drama can do,' he says, 'Once I'd got my skates on, I just felt I could fly with it.
'I think the days of the single play are more or less over, unfortunately. The series is the one thing left now which can do what the cinema and stage can't - take seven or eight hours to develop characters and situations.'

From March 1986, also in The Sunday Times:

Says Malahide: 'People ask me what it's about and all I can say is that it's a psychological case history, seen in terms of a detective novel, set to music!'
