Movies Watched -- Our Children

They give you the bad news straight away, which makes you dread the next 100+ minutes ... it's 111 minutes so at least 11 minutes too long.  The mother's depression, her mental illness, wasn't explored very well ... you don't really understand why she snapped. Andre as inescapable despot or monster? Saint as predator? I don't know if I buy it ... the mother would need to have very weak social ties for them to hold such sway.  Anyway, I didn't fast forward at all, yellow rating.

Breaking the rule of never voluntarily watching movies related to the Holocaust ... interesting that it takes the perspective of these kids who are abandoned by their elite Nazi parents, left to fend for themselves at the end of the war. They meet a Jewish boy along the way who helps them. Hannelore ("Lore") is the oldest child ... confused as her world falls apart ...  about 10 minutes too long at 109 minutes ... I wasn't super thrilled with it though I didn't fast forward at all, which is a good sign.  Wonderful last scene, last sequence, really.  Sideways rating, yellow (not green or red).

Movies Watched -- Inside Llewyn Davis

A Coen Brothers movie ... their imagining of the Greenwich Village folk music scene in 1961. Stars a talented singer named Oscar Isaac who plays kind of an awful guy.  Full of little jokes that amuse the Coens, typical of their movies, dark jokes ... about a struggling artist looking to make it commercially ... several cast members from "Girls," those guys (Driver, Karpovsky) are getting a lot of work now, and Coen usuals like John Goodman. Wasn't that thrilled with it, but didn't fast forward at all, just over 100 minutes. Yellow, sideways rating.

3 minute chart ... about a $10 range, not too bad.  IPO price was $68, I think... opened at $92.70 it looks like.

Fast forwarded from ten minutes in ... somewhere in Africa ... too grim to watch ... children forced to become soldiers ... she is considered to have some kind of special power ... looks like hell on earth ... no way can I watch this. Under 100 minutes but unwatchable. Red rating (means I couldn't watch it).

Movies Watched -- Museum Hours

Attractive though dimwitted? Canadian woman ... all Canadians with spark leave of course; she stayed ... maybe that's mean ... anyway, the museum guard, also kind of common, though a bit more introspective, more thoughtful ... they strike up a friendship .. nothing sexual about it, he's gay, and they're both in their 50s, late 50s, early 60s? ... maybe six or seven minutes over the 100 minute mark, but this is very slow stuff ... lonely people ... they could have cut a lot of these atmospheric shots to get it under 100 ... depressing in its commonness, its honesty, I guess you could say ... reflections on art, money, class, politics, the state of modern Austria ...  Bruegel's work: "not sentimental nor do they judge" ... "rubbing our noses in... humanity" ... "importance of the horse's ass" ... flea markets ... still worried about Turkish invasions, ha! ... this isn't for mass consumption, it's about art and life and friendship... and death.

I liked it but don't know if I can recommend it, it's slow and it's too long ... only the sensitive will get this. Maybe one in a thousand will appreciate this like I did.  Green rating but only for the select few.

Movies Watched -- Blancanieves

Fast forwarded from ten minutes in ... black and white silent movie with dramatic orchestra and Spanish guitar ... Capital A.R.T. arthouse throwback piece, an homage, 100 minutes long ... is that Don Draper's wife? Bullfighting dwarves? I think I could have sat through this if in the mood, but wasn't. Red rating but probably yellow in a stretch.

I liked this one ... under 100 minutes ... learned a lot about Saudi Arabia and its awful culture.  Maybe a bit precious and predictable, but it was well done ... see it if you get the chance.  Green rating.
