Vanguard posted a nice article and chart last week explaining how a bond fund's NAV doesn't reflect all of its return. It's also true that a stock's price doesn't reflect all of its return, assuming it pays a dividend that is reinvested.
"... using NAV to measure fund performance doesn't tell the whole story. Over the long run, the change in NAV is a tiny part of a
bond fund's total return. Much more important is the interest income a bond fund produces -- and the reinvestment of that interest
income in additional shares."
