You can read about MSCI's new family of US equity indices here if that kind of thing gets you hot and bothered. They're using the Global Industry Classification Standard (GICS) to classify securities: 10 sectors, 24 industry groups, 62 industries, 132 sub-industries. GICS is one of the few useful things one learns about in business school.

I laughed when I read this, for several reasons. (You can always turn to a local newspaper for cheap amusement.)

"While [Daylight Savings Time] is practiced mostly worldwide, there are a few exceptions.

'There are places like Hawaii, and Arizona where it just doesn't matter,' Bartels said. 'So they don't need to do it. There are several places in the country that for whatever reason don't participate.'

And then there is China.

'They've got one time zone for the entire country, and the country covers at least four time zones,' Bartels said. 'So 6 a.m. is like 1 p.m. in some parts of the country.'"

When I work on the computer I always listen to music. WBGO (Newark, New Jersey) is a great jazz station, and a friend recently turned me on to another jazz station, KCSM (San Mateo, California). I never listen to commercial radio.

Download the free RealOne player here if you don't already have it.

Here's a kind of dumb article by Steve Maich called "Merrill Lynch muzzles staff."

"Merrill Lynch has instructed all of its analysts, economists and strategists to refuse direct phone calls from print journalists. From now on, all interview requests must go through the communications office to ensure all regulatory rules are met."

This is a line that made me chuckle: "But analysts are supposed to talk. That's their entire role in the capital markets."

Robert Spears wrote a provocative (wrong, but provocative) article called "What Free vs. Paid is Really About" that I encourage you to read (the comments at the end of the article are very good).

Checking up on Yahoo! and Amazon.com. The blue arrows mark the times that I thought the market was overly pessimistic (and perhaps more important, the times that the Chairman's wife agreed it was a good "jihui" (opportunity) to make new long-term investments).
