Biotech Index and Apple Should Both Rally From Here

Added on by C. Maoxian.

I'm seeing a lot of buy set-ups on the weekly charts ... among the 20 or so that I've spotted, I'll only feature the ones that I think hold the most popular interest: Biotech (represented by the XBI) and Apple (AAPL).

Risk-reward in the XBI is around six times off the weekly, but day traders should be able to reduce their initial risk very quickly once in the position.

Apple's pattern is a bit more complicated and the minimum expected risk-reward (at the $120 target) isn't great off the weekly low, but if it got back to $140, that would be nice.

If both of these set-ups fail, then you'll know we're in for a "bear market" and you should adjust your expectations accordingly.

Sorry To Keep You After You Were Gone

Added on by C. Maoxian.

No good live version of Sam Phillips singing "If I Could Write" on YouTube, so I'm forced to embed this. Discovered via Spotify's algo. I dig it.

This is the 11th song from Sam Phillips' 2004 album, "A Boot and a Shoe."

Syma Helicopters A Joy

Added on by C. Maoxian.

My boy recently turned 11 and I got him this little Syma helicopter as a gift.  It's such a joy to fly that we fight over it, and Dad has had to order one of his own now (well, a larger model, the S032). It's super stable, charges using a USB cable, has a flight time of around six to eight minutes, and is beautifully constructed. A steal at $20!

Shadow Cast Over First Solar

Added on by C. Maoxian.

Flipping through the charts this long weekend, I also see that First Solar (FSLR) set up short. It has already triggered, but the minimum target is so far down there that you should still take a look at it.

Bad News for Gold Bugs

Added on by C. Maoxian.

Despite the broad market sort of collapsing, gold isn't doing much. In fact, Barrick Gold (ABX) looks like a short to me for the third time in three years. Frayed-shirtcuff Elliott Wavers spotted a short set-up in February 2014, and again in May 2015. Now in January 2016, the voodoo is projecting a target price of $4ish. Ugly.

Opening Minutes Range Reversals

Linda Bradford Raschke probably has a name for this one ... needs to be high percentage because the risk reward ain't great. Not for the aged.

Summer Scooter Selection

Added on by C. Maoxian.

I plan to buy a scooter next summer to zip around the countryside on ... there are two 49cc choices offered by the Japanese for tough guys like me: the Yamaha Vino and the Honda Metropolitan.

From an aesthetic viewpoint, I prefer the Vino: two-tone paint and sharper wheels. Not sure how much they differ in price. Would be nice to take the kids to school on a scooter instead of firing up the CR-Vibrator for a five minute trip twice a day. Wonder how well a 49cc machine can handle the hills of Ithaca, especially while hauling my Falstaffian bulk.

GoPro Downtrend in Place Since Last Summer

Added on by C. Maoxian.

Here's the complete record of how my trend-following system has handled GoPro since it IPO'd back in the summer of 2014. Some losses, a gain, but most important: disaster avoided. Again, any institution that has a frayed-shirtcuff chartist on the payroll has to be glad.

Avoiding Disaster in Valeant Pharmaceuticals (VRX)

Added on by C. Maoxian.

Again, applying my trend-following system to a single stock, this time Valeant Pharmaceuticals. Mr. Ackman clearly doesn't have a frayed-shirtcuff chartist on his staff who can identify trend reversals. For what it's worth, the system got long VRX again in early December; probably will wipe out the gain from earlier, but only time will tell.
